AFRICAphonie has just published a 32 page Guide on Conservation Journalism. The Guide is a compendium of presentations done during a 3 day workshop titled “Building Capacity for Conservation Coverage: The Earth Journalism Network Approach."
The Main Aim was to train 30 community radio broadcasters on how to identify, collect, translate in Pidgin English and disseminate best conservation practices and related issues within their communities. Its objectives included:
- Build capacities of community radio journalists to raise public awareness on biodiversity and conservation issues using Pidgin English.
- Strengthen community media institutions with the knowledge of the fundamental role that environmental awareness plays in their work.
- Design and publish a skills handbook on Conservation that would help community radio Journalists carry out their work and train others who could not be invited to the workshop.

Expected Outcomes include:
- Skills and knowledge on general conservation issues for 30 community radio broadcasters are enhanced.
- Copies of skills handbook on radio programmes for Conservation issues are produced.
- 30 programmes of 30 minutes each on conservation issues are broadcast in 30 community radios.
- Network of community radio broadcasters on conservation issues in North West and South West regions is created.
- Awareness on laws governing Conservation of the country is raised among the rural population.
Implementing ORGANISATION
AFRICAphonie is a development organization registered under 458/G.37/D 14/ Vol. 1/ 21 OAPP. It was legalized on 30th November 1998. AFRICAphonie for over 20 years has been involved with target groups like media practitioners, cultural professionals, women and youths, and victims of conflict in the areas of capacity building, communication and marketing, policy advocacy and strategic planning. Our organisation has worked in many maritime areas to raise awareness on deforestation, mangrove depletion and alternative sources of livelihood in the South West region of Cameroon with villagers as our target groups. Working with community radio broadcasters shall sustain the work we have been carrying out on the ground.
Partner ORGANISATION
Internews developed the Earth Journalism Network (EJN) to empower and enable journalists from developing countries to cover the environment more effectively. With a mission to improve the quantity and quality of environmental coverage, EJN trains journalists to cover a wide variety of topics, develops ground-breaking digital media sites, establishes networks of environmental journalists in countries where they don't exist, and builds their capacity where they do, through workshops and development of training materials, Fellowship programs, support for story production and distribution, and dispersing small grants.
